May 2019

Wednesday 8th May - Fulbourn Swifts Group will meet every Wednesday from 8th May starting at 7.30 pm in front of St Vigor’s Church on Manor Walk (CB21 5BN) to survey swift activity in the village. Friday 10th - Sunday 12th May
Swift Race 2019 (Highland Perthshire and Angus Glens – i.e. anywhere within CNPA/Tayside boundary) – Friday 10th May (9am) until Sunday 12th May (9pm) – keep a look out for our returning swifts! Friday 10th 7:30pm  at Kirrie Connections, Kirriemuir – Join us for a Swift talk, followed by a guided walk around the town to spot swifts and their nest sites.

Saturday 11th 7:30pm  at The Birks Cinema, Aberfeldy – Join us for a Swift talk, followed by a guided walk around the town to spot swifts and their nest sites.

Tuesday 21st 7:30pm ' Taking Action for Swifts in Berkhamstead and Tring' An evening of short talks and informal workshops to share the wonders of this amazing bird, highlight the trouble it’s in and what we can all do to help locally. Hosted by The Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust, Transition Town Berkhamstead & Wild Tring.

Sunday 26th - Kinross Discovery Day – come and meet us in the main marquee at Kirkgate, Kinross. Let us know where you have seen swifts and help us add “dots on the map” for the area.

June 2019

Thursday 13th June, from 8:30pm - Swift Walk and Talk. Meet outside the Brander Library, The Square, Huntly Aberdeenshire AB54 8BR at 8.30pm. Hear all about the Swifts and a short walk to watch them. Free event but donations welcome.

Saturday 15th June, 11am to 5pm - Fulbourn Swifts Group will have a Swift Open Day at St Vigor’s Church (CB21 5BN) with displays, nest boxes, refreshments and, we hope, live viewing on a TV screen of activity in the monitored nest boxes. This event is being held in conjunction with Fulbourn Open Gardens, which is being organised by the primary school PTfA, so there will also be an opportunity to view some beautiful gardens in the village on the day for a small fee.

Thursday 20th June, from 7:00pm - Swift Stroll. Run by NESBReC (North East Scotland Biological Records Centre) and Huntly Swift Group. Meet at the car park for the Davidson Field on Elphinstone Road/Riverside Park, Inverurie at 7pm. Book a free place at nesbrec@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Friday 21st June, 2:00pm - Edward Mayer, Swift Conservation, is giving a talk at the Booth Museum in Brighton.

Friday 21st June, 8:00pm - Ware Swift Walk. Meet outside Fletcher's Lea, Ware Priory, SG12 9AL for a walk around the town spotting Swifts and possible nest sites. Everyone welcome, no need to book - just turn up.

July 2019

Saturday 29th June to Sunday 7th July - Milton Keynes Festival of Nature. See full festival programme at www.mkfestivalofnature.org. There will be a stand showcasing SWIFTS and showing some of the fantastic projects that have gone on in our area recently. Sue Hetherington, Buckingham Swifts (and MKNHS member)


Monday 1st July, from 8:30pm - Swift Walk and Talk. Meet outside Oldmeldrum Town Hall AB51 0DS . Hear all about the Swifts and a short walk to watch them. Free event but donations welcome.

Tuesday 2nd July, 7:00pm
An informative talk at All Saints’ Thorpe Acre Church Hall, Thorpe Acre Road, Loughborough, LE11 4LF about the wonderful life of swifts and swift conservation efforts, followed by a guided swift-spotting walk in the local area. Swift walk organised by Cherwell Swifts - meet at St Peter and St Paul Church Kings Sutton near Banbury  OX17 3RJ. Join us for an evening stroll to see the best Swift sites in town; discover more about these amazing birds and what is being done locally to try to halt their decline. Wednesday 3rd July, 7:00pm
A talk on swifts  at Blue Bell Inn, 36 Main St, Hoby, Melton Mowbray LE14 3DT followed by a guided walk around the village including a visit to the church to view on screen the swift’s nests from cameras situated above their nests.  The evening will end with a Bat walk.

 3 Sunnybank Great Rollright OX7 5RL (near the village green).  An evening stroll to see some of the local Swifts at their nest sites, and to learn more about these amazing birds, why their numbers are declining and what is being done to help. Free event , no need to book.

Saturday 20th July, 5:00pm
Hathersage Swift Day will include an hour’s stroll in small guided groups, starting from the Heart of Hathersage (S32 1BB) at 5pm We would welcome visitors from elsewhere in Derbyshire and beyond (please use the car park on Oddfellows Rd. opposite the swimming pool). The walk will take in some of the village swift hotspots, look at a variety of swift boxes, and finish with a chance to relax and, we hope, watch the swift action, around T’End House on Park Edge. Refreshments will be served and any donations gratefully received to help fund future projects of the Hathersage Swift Group. Sunday 21st July, 10:30am
RSPB Chester Group will be at the Hoole Allotments Open Day Festival between 10.30am and 4.00pm showing people how to help swifts and explaining the pressures they face. Allotments are at eastern end of Panton Rd (CH2 3HL). Entrance to Festival costs £2.00 including entry into raffle draw.

Friday 26th July, 8:30pm
Crieff Swift Walk, meet in James Square PH7 3EY at 8.30pm - join us for a guided swift walk to find out how we can all help these amazing birds, whose numbers have dropped by over 60% in the past 20 years. More events are planned in Crieff so please contact DMuir@taysideswifts.co.uk for more information.

September 2019

Saturday 7th September, from 9am - 4pm - Huntly and District Swift Group will be at Hairst Food Festival.  The Square, Huntly, Aberdeenshire AB54 8BR.
